Profile of the Deputy Minister of Finance

Jabulani Moleketi has served as Deputy Minister of Finance since 2004. He is a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC).

The Deputy Minister is chairs the board of the Public Investment Corporation and is responsible for financial regulation through the Financial Services Board. He is also spearheading the National Treasury’s involvement in preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Government is working closely with FIFA, the Local Organising Committee, the host cities and the private sector to ensure a major success in 2010. The Deputy Minister has indicated that government will meet its construction deadlines, having set aside about R8,4 billion to build and upgrade stadiums, and an additional R6 billion to improve public transport infrastructure and communication systems.

To fulfil this range of responsibilities, the Deputy Minister stays in shape by running marathons, whenever time permits. He has run both the Comrades Marathon (89 kilometres) in KwaZulu-Natal and the Two Oceans Marathon (56 kilometres) in Cape Town.

Jabulani Moleketi was born in Soweto in 1957. He joined the ANC underground in 1975 and, following the 1976 Soweto uprising that changed the course of South African history, went into exile, becoming part of the ANC’s military structures In the 1980s he received military training in the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and in Cuba.

In 1991 he returned to South Africa following the unbanning of the ANC. He pursued his studies with a post-graduate diploma in Economic Principles (1996) and a Master of Science in Financial Economics at the University of London (2001). He also completed an advanced management programme at Harvard Business School (2003).

From 1994 to 2004 he served as member of the executive council (MEC) for finance and economic affairs in the Gauteng provincial government. During this period he oversaw the implementation of economic policy reform and a range of development initiatives in South Africa’s economic hub. He also acted as provincial premier at various times. As MEC he was responsible for managing the provincial budget; economic policy; trade and investment promotion; tourism, gambling and gaming; consumer affairs; the multibillion rand “Blue IQ” investment programme; and the Gauteng Economic Development Agency.

Deputy Minister Moleketi is married to Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, who is the Minister of Public Service and Administration. Together they have three children: Nothando, Themba and Solomzi.
